A vendor list is not a vendor program. The difference shows up the moment a job goes sideways and someone has to decide, in real time, whose phone to pick up.
An operating discipline begins with qualification: what does a vendor have to demonstrate before they are eligible to receive work? It continues with onboarding, scope clarity, performance review, and a documented path to replacement.
None of this is glamorous. All of it determines whether the business absorbs shocks or transmits them to clients.
The companies that handle vendors well do not have better contacts. They have better systems.
